A friend of mine mentioned a technique for creating a texture base from a Zbrush sculpt. Can anyone elaborate on that and maybe add it to the tutorial list?

Thank you!

Hi jdelrio,

Yes, there is way to capture your sculpting detail to the uv's of your object, much like the projecting of a normal map. This method also allows you to control
the lighting on your texture sheet through use of Zbrush materials. Additionally, you can capture the properties of the material or matcap (gloss, color, etc) through this procedure.

I find this method far superior to any sort of ambient occlusion method for texture base/overlay. I will post this technique within a week.

Thanks for your request!

Hi all,

I came across your site recently and you have some of the best tutorials on the net! My request is what is the best way to render game models from maya, as i know i don't have the correct render and material setup to achieve the best results, to get a crisp and sharp render showing all the object and material details.

I going for something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiQrfLVlvrM

For example where do i include the maps used for game models like spec, gloss or emissive in a maya material? There are so many options.

I know this request may sound basic but its been driving me nuts trying to figure out the best way to show off my work in its final stage.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Rag.

Hey Rag,

The example you sent, the Dominance War winner, I believe was rendered in the free application "toolbag", a lite version of the game engine Marmoset.
This is a very powerful little app that I use constantly at work. If you are a Maya user, and even better running Maya 2008, you can export models and animations directly into this app. Here's the link to download it: http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=61346" rel="nofollow">http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=61346

Stay tuned and I'll make a video on how to do all this stuff ASAP!

Thanks!

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the quick reply, i know about the marmoset tool bag its a great engine which i've been using for a while but i wanted to know of there was a technique of achieving the same effect in maya. In your opinion whats the best way to show off work in a portfolio sense, game engine or maya renders?

I am very familiar with the next gen game pipeline apart from light, material and rendering setup that truly shows off the work. If you could point me in the right direction i will be grateful!

Thanks again

Rag.

Hi Rag:

Ah okay!

Well, I think if you want to present game art, then you are better off using a game engine for rendering (Toolbag, Unreal, Etc). However, I'd be happy to make a video on rendering a game asset in Maya (Mental Ray) if you like! I can also include the Maya scene file so you can just drop your asset in and render away!

Hi Rag,

I have also had trouble with the animation export from Maya. Since I don't have 2008, I think I am SOL because the plugins are not compatible past 2008. I tried getting some answers on the polycount board, but apparently there's nothing for 2009.

Anyhow, I'll go ahead with the Maya video! Should be up in a few days!

Thanks!

A tutorial on matching the maya camera to a real world camera would be great, i have searched the web for this and found practically nothing.

October 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterklaphat

Klaphat,

Are you referring to a moving camera or a still camera shot?

A simple dolly is about as far as you want to go regarding a moving camera in Maya, otherwise I recommend a tracking software such as SynthEyes.

Pete,

Thanks for the fast reply, i know about tracking software, i was refering more to still camera matching how do you translate camera exif data for use in maya, filmback etc.

I know this might be a bit out of the scope for a maya tutorial but i seems a lot of people have trouble translating their digital camera to mayas 35mm.

I'd love to see a tutorial/s on using the painting/texturing functionality of Z-Brush. Thanks and this site is awesome btw. I've been sharing it with every creative person I know to help get the word out.
